You know at this point I don't have any hard feelings against Tunisia or Jordan. I don't mind King Abdullah of Jordan, I see him more as a reformer, his wife is a good model for Muslim women too. There are a lot of good Tunisian people who are secular and have much in common with the French; I feel very bad for them that they have to tolerate the Islamist rule. It seems so far that the Tunisian Islamists are more tolerant then those in Egypt, but it's too early to decide. I was one who gave the Arabs the benefit of the doubt and now I feel like a total fool for believing they wanted to be free and have a democracy.
As for Turkey, I hear good things about it from people who visit it. But visiting the main cities as a tourist I imagine isn't going to give much incite into the reality that minorities face there, and the extremism which lurks in the dark.
Btw, where is your friend Ghassan?
well it's a waiting game now. why do you visit turkey if it's a bad place? why give them your business? i feel christian people should boycott going to egypt in protest of their intolerant islamist government, let them get a taste of their own medicine and live off daily fresh catch from the nile river. the americans are terrible in supporting the islamists, it almost makes me believe they are doing it intentionally to keep them backwards!
I came across this link on cedars' old forum, when I praised the Turkish top Imam for condemning the Saudis grand Mufti's remarks on Churches:
Basically, he is saying that he and other Christians are living in fear (as you noted the Jews were).
So much for "modern and progressive" Turkey. It just goes to show you how behind the other Islamic states are for Turkey to be praised so much.
With Iran, I feel there will be a change in the future. That is my hope anyways, and it would have a positive impact on the region. I read a bit about Turkey, about what you mentioned. Some people say that Erdogan is an Islamist and he is bringing Turkey backwards, do you feel this way? I've not known of many Turks, so I have no idea. All I know is that they annihilated all the religious minorities in the early 1900s and today Turkey is almost pure Muslim.
You are probably right about Islam and democracy. But what is democracy anyways? If the Egypts in a couple days democratically vote in an extreme Islamists, is that democracy?
The Americans need to stop preaching democracy by itself and start focusing on human rights, tolerance, and equality. Democracy in itself can be quite dangerous, as we've seen in Iran and soon to be seen in Egypt...
Well "thanks" for the informative post on Iran. You learn new things everyday,
